- Technicians confirmed to perform wintering (contract of 14 months on average) or a summer campaign (contract of 4 months) on the Dumont d’Urville station or Concordia.
- Young graduates aged from 18 years as part of the Voluntary Civic Service (VSC).
IPEV recruits each year for stations in the Austral Islands and Dumont d’Urville, forty VSC who ensures the continuity of observations during the wintering. For the employment, strict criteria imposed by the specificity of vacancies, and by the special context of the French Southern and Antarctic Territories (thorough medical examination, psychological examination).
- Ensures the monitoring, with research laboratories in France, for scientific programs taking place in the field: maintenance of acquisitions systems, collecting all the data needed to conduct these programs.
- Participates in the operation and maintenance of station on the technical level.
The IPEV can support before departure, 6-week training in the scientific unit of attachment and a training for sorting through data during 6 weeks also at wintering return.
The wintering is constituted of a period of 12 consecutive months. Missions, in these remote areas of the world inhabited and difficult to access, are composed of a select group of individuals (15 to 60 people). In this context of isolation, each must be able to integrate the community living environment.
This experience constitutes undeniably an asset for professional integration as indicate a survey of former volunteers.
IPEV mainly offers positions for a wintering for 13 to 14 months.
Three statuses for these missions:
Is designed for experienced professionals with at least 5 years of professional experience.
Who: experienced professionals for technical management positions, chief engineer, plumber heating, electrical engineer at the power station, diesel mechanic for machine public works, cook (9 vacancies to be filled each year). In addition to their professional qualification, candidates must absolutely possess a great ability in community life in confinement. In this respect, all the staff recruited is subject, in addition to traditional job interviews, psychological interviews, so as to assess their ability to support a community living in isolated conditions. The candidates undergo a thorough medical examination, determining the medical risks in an environment where care scientific stations infrastructure and opportunities for personal evacuation remain limited.

Is designed for young beginners with little professional experience (38 positions):
Who: Voluntary Civic Service is open to any male or female over the age of 18 years.
Conditions for access to voluntary civic service:
Voluntary person must have:
- Either French nationality
- Or the nationality of a Member State of the European Union
- Or the nationality of a State party to the Agreement on the European Economic Area
- Or justify to be legally resident in France for more than one year under cover of one of the residence permits listed Chapter II Section 2 of Act No. 2010-241.
Recruits are loaded:
- Firstly, to monitor scientific programs taking place in the field, working in conjunction with research laboratories in France: maintenance of acquisitions systems, collecting all the data necessary for the conduct of these programs;
- Secondly, to participate in the operation and maintenance of bases technically.
The required level of minimum BAC + 2 with the exception of a few specific occupations such as baker, carpenter.
Voluntary Civic service is not a volunteer work, the VSC receive a monthly allowance of 1,012 euros net, not subject to income tax, housed and fed during the mission in the French Southern and Antarctic Lands.

Is designed for young beginners with little professional experience (2 positions):
Who: VIA is open to any male or female over the age of 18 and under 28 on the date of registration.
Conditions for access to voluntary civic service:
Voluntary person must have:
- Either French nationality
- Or the nationality of a member state of the European Union
- Or the nationality of a state party to the Agreement on the European Economic Area
- Be in order with the national service obligations of the country which they are nationals.
- Enjoy civic rights, shall have a clean criminal record and complete physical fitness.
- Not to have made an International Volunteer before.
Volunteering International is not volunteer work. The V.I.A. receives a monthly lump sum payment, variable according to the country of assignment, but independent of the level of qualification.
